CNN —Not long ago, senior citizens got the two biggest annual increases in their monthly Social Security checks that most had ever seen. While inflation has afflicted Americans of every age, senior citizens are often in a more difficult predicament because many live off fixed incomes. Many depend heavily on Social Security – some 42% of elderly women and 37% of elderly men rely on the monthly payments for at least half their income, according to the Social Security Administration. They aren’t wrong: Inflation has eaten away at 36% of Social Security benefits’ buying power since 2000, according to an analysis last year from The Senior Citizens League. The president needs these senior voters since polls also show his support among younger Americans has eroded since 2020.

I’ve always been skeptical of the staycation. So I was intrigued to discover, thanks to my colleague Catherine Pearson, that I have been staycationing all wrong. Evidently, my tendency to stumble into time off without a plan is unlikely to produce a restorative effect. This weekend, you could, for instance, seek out some vegan ice cream that doesn’t taste terrible. You could try running in a pool, which is easier on the joints but as effective as running on land.

The Newport News Public Schools district announced Thursday that a detector will be installed at Richneck Elementary School, where Abigail Zwerner was shot while teaching. The Virginia elementary teacher who police say was intentionally shot by a 6-year-old student is being hailed as a hero who saved lives by escorting her students out of the classroom while wounded. The boy's mother had legally purchased the gun, Drew said. After the shooting, Drew said, police consulted with various agencies including the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, and services for children's welfare. Police, city and school district officials had not publicly named Zwerner as the teacher who was wounded prior to Monday. “Because of the ongoing nature of the investigation, we will not be releasing any further information at this time.”The 6-year-old student was not identified because of his age.

A 20-year-old man was arrested in connection with a shooting Sunday near Virginia's James Madison University that injured eight people. Police announced Fleming's arrest at about 4:30 p.m., hours after the shooting in the 1500 block of Devon Lane, less than a mile from the university in Harrisonburg. Shots were fired around 2:20 a.m. into a crowd at an outdoor gathering near the university, police said. Five of the injured were treated at Sentara RMH Medical Center and three others were transported to University of Virginia Medical Center, authorities said. James Madison University Police Chief Anthony Matos said in a statement Sunday that the victims “are not students currently enrolled."

Eight people were shot overnight near James Madison University in Virginia, leaving them with non-life threatening injuries, police said. A representative for James Madison University did not immediately respond to an inquiry about whether any students, faculty or staff were among the injured. A representative for Sentara RMH Medical Center said the hospital initially received seven patients, two of whom were transferred to the University of Virginia Medical Center, a level 1 trauma center that offers comprehensive care after traumatic injuries. The five patients who remained at Sentara RMH Medical Center had been discharged by Sunday afternoon, the spokesperson said. A representative for the University of Virginia Medical Center said they could not provide updates on patients' conditions without having identifying information for them.
